Paper Roll Runway Beam – Able Lifting Equipment (Southern) Ltd, Poole

Able Lifting Equipment had a requirement for stress analysis be carried out on a structure used for transporting a paper roll along a runway beam. The structure consisted of a 15 metre long main runway beam, which is supported by 4 sets of uprights. The existing structure was used to transport a 3.6 tonne load which would run along the beam using a pair chain blocks suspended from beam trolleys which are 2.75 metres apart. The complete structure was to be uprated to support a total load of 5 tonnes, shared between the two lift points.

Paul Engert Mechanical Design carried out a full stress analysis on all of the structural and load bearing members to ascertain their suitability for the uprated load. The calculations determined the stresses and deflections in the steel members as the load passed along them. The results were then compared with the limiting values as specified in BS EN 1993-6:2007 (Design of Steel Structures – Part 6: Crane Supporting Structures).
